Picture of author Stephen De La Vega, man standing in front of foliage wearing a purple shirt and black and white neck tieStephen has enjoyed teaching biblical truth over the past few decades.  He began leading a Bible study at work in 2010.  Some members were well learned and faithful teachers themselves, so Stephen quickly realized that what he knew intellectually was not as important as how the Holy Spirit directed him to lead discussions.

Stephen believes, “God’s Word should be central to every study because it is the unquestionable and authoritative source of truth, and it is reliable to stir and improve the hearts of those who seek Him with humility.  Bible studies are God’s studies and good leaders allow God to teach through the Holy Spirit.”  He hopes his books and blog will be used by leaders who let God do the teaching and by Christians with the humility to allow God to lead them.

Stephen and his wife have three sons and live in California.

  How are we doing with our first resolution:  I will worship God alone ? That resolution was from  Exodus 20:24 . In  Exodus 20 , the Israelites promised to worship only God. They did that for a while until their faith leader Moses was gone too long. Then they crafted and worshiped a golden calf instead. A statue. They were too comfortable worshiping in the manner of their captors, the Egyptians, from whom God rescued them. After they misplaced their allegiance onto the statue, they quickly slipped into feasting and carousing – carousing in ways that dishonored the true God. This felt more familiar to them. Worshiping the true God was a promise that quickly faded from their hearts. Stone Cold Truth about the Grave, Grace, and Honor

We may not think of Jesus’ tomb as a tomb of honor, but it was. It was prepared with honor, it was sacrificed with honor, and Jesus was buried in it with honor. But it was not honor that led Him there. The death of Jesus was a death of mockery, deceit, divisiveness, lies, misunderstanding, and, especially, hatred, retaliation, and pain. But this was all part of God’s gracious plan to restore us into His fellowship. Amazing grace led Jesus to the cross. It’s a story known across the globe and through the ages. We can be saved because of God’s amazing grace. Grace ushered Jesus to the cross and to His earthly grave. By grace we are saved through faith, by grace we enjoy a personal relationship with Christ, and by grace we serve a resurrected Lord. How could someone spread His arms so open with love, and leave them extended to take the blows of torture, of humiliation, of rejection ...even rejection from His Father? Resolution 3: Aim High

  Look up. Into the sky. Can you see the end of the sky? We can’t see the end, can we? And we don’t have to. It’s satisfying to know there is no end. In fact, the phrase, “The sky’s the limit,” means there is no limit. No limit to the length of the sky. No limit to how successful we can be. No limit to how much money we can earn. No limit to what we can accomplish ... No limit. Aim High. Eyes on the prize. We can get there. It works the same with resolutions. Resolution #3: I Will Aim High We discussed worshiping and obeying God in Resolutions 1 and 2 . Worshiping the true God while also worshiping other “gods” is not really worshiping the true God. Obeying God sporadically or less than wholeheartedly is not really obeying God. But if we aim high, we will be more consistent in our worship and obedience.
